SCOTT'S
EARLY BEGINNINGS...
Scott’s
musical journey began in Southern California (Orange County
to be specific). A friend from church was trying to put
a band together. Constantly complaining about not being
able to find a steady drummer, naturally Scott volunteered.
Shortly thereafter he realized he had little talent for
drumming. However the bass player had quit and knowing
a few guitar chords, he felt the bass might be better
suited to his talents (along with the rest of the band).
After a few Sundays and church picnics Scott’s musical
career was on hold again.
After farting around for a couple of years, graduating
high school, starting college, stopping college, starting
college . . . you get the picture. Long time friend Ed
Coker mentioned something about wanting to learn to play
keyboards at a game night. Scott replied “When you
do let me know we can put a band together.” That
night Phantasie was formed, with Scott playing guitar,
best friend Curt playing bass and Ed on keys. Fellow gamer,
Kevin Steidel, was recruited the next week to play drums.
Curt had to back out because of schedule issues and a
couple of weeks later Rob Rogers joined the group. Now
all that was needed was a bass player. Since Rob was a
much better guitar player Scott took the job.
Phantasie held that lineup for a couple of years. Eventually,
Ed got married and dropped out. The rest of the band played
as a three piece under several names. Curt came back,
Scott moved to rhythm guitar and the occasional “lead
bass” position. This formation (along with a couple
of guest guitarist) led to the creation of Pet Roxx.

Musical
influences.
Paul McCartney - both as a bass player and a vocalist.
John Entwistle of the Who (1944 - 2002) was probably
the first time I, or anyone else, ever noticed
a bass player out in front.
John Paul Jones, Led Zeplin, the second. . .
Jack Bruce of Cream the prototype power
trio bass player
Mozart - very cool bass lines. . . and tenor
lines and . . . sorry I digress.
Other notables
Chris Squire, Yes; Jack Newhouse, Double Trouble
and others - great groove; John Deacon, Queen; Don
"Duck" Dunn, The Blues Brothers and others
- another great groove. Tre' Cool, Green Day - another
great trio bassist. |

In
1998 Scott’s day job moved him to Cedar Rapids and
three years of musical exile. A mutual friend hooked Scott
up with Cedar Rapids based “results May vary”
(rMv) in late 2001. In August, 2005, after a long run
and a great farewell concert in Marion Square Park, rMv
“died in its sleep”. (RIP)
I guess that brings us to the present. Scott and Ken played
a benefit in Urbana as Monkey Business. A couple of weeks
later Kevin joined us and away we went. . .
